Swords described in medieval accounts as "Damascus steel" were prized for a rippling, water-like pattern across the blade and a reputation for holding an edge unusually well. The name is somewhat misleading: the blades were forged in cities like Damascus, but the steel itself -- called wootz -- was originally produced as ingots in India and Sri Lanka, then traded west and worked by local smiths. The distinctive pattern comes from bands of carbide particles that form inside the steel during a very specific, slow forging and cooling process, one that concentrates carbon unevenly through the metal rather than spreading it uniformly. By around the eighteenth century, this original method had apparently disappeared, and smiths lost the ability to reproduce true wootz blades, though the reasons remain debated -- theories range from depleted ore sources to a simple failure to pass the technique down. Modern blades marketed as "Damascus steel" today are usually made through an entirely different process called pattern welding, in which layers of two or more different steel alloys are folded and forge-welded together repeatedly, then etched to reveal a wavy pattern where the layers meet. The visual result can look remarkably similar to historic wootz blades, which has led to frequent confusion, but the mechanism producing the pattern -- layered welding rather than internal carbide banding -- is genuinely different.
