These terms are the agreement between you and us for the use of kotobapro.com. By making an account or paying for a subscription, you accept them.
KotobaPro is independent practice material for people preparing for the TOEFL iBT test. We write our own exercises, model our formats on the publicly documented structure of the test, and explain our sources on the sources page.
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to ETS. TOEFL is a registered trademark of ETS, used here only to say what our material prepares you for. We do not sell official test materials, we cannot register you for the test, and we have no part in your official score.
Practicing here does not guarantee any result. Nothing on the site is a prediction of the score you will receive.
You need an account for anything that saves your progress or sends your work for feedback. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has access to it, email hello@kotobapro.com.
An account is for one person. Please do not share a login, and please do not make an account for someone else to use.
KotobaPro is for people preparing for the test and the teachers helping them. It is not for anyone under 16.

These are the current allowances rather than a promise for all time. If we change them, the change applies going forward, not to something you have already unlocked.

A subscription gives you unlimited AI feedback on Write an Email and Academic Discussion, every listening item, and 60 minutes of speech analysis in each 30-day period.
Prices are listed in US dollars and are final — no sales tax is added at checkout. At checkout you may be charged in your local currency instead, converted at the rate applied at that moment, so the amount on your statement can differ from the figure above.
Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period and continue until you cancel. If we change a price, we will tell you before it affects a renewal of yours.
Payment is handled by Stripe. We never see or hold your card number.
Nothing is charged during the 14-day trial. If you cancel before it ends, you pay nothing at all. If you do not cancel, the subscription begins automatically when the trial ends and the first payment is taken then.
You can cancel at any time, from the "Manage Subscription" link on your Dashboard, or by emailing hello@kotobapro.com.
Cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing period you have already paid for. You keep full access until then, and no partial refund is given for the remaining days. This is the whole of the refund policy: a month paid is a month kept.

A teacher's pass is an account we issue at a teacher's request, for one of their students. It gives full access to the site plus a set number of AI-graded exercises each week. If you hold one, you pay us nothing, you have no billing relationship with us, and there is nothing for you to buy — your access is arranged by your teacher, not by you.
A pass cannot be transferred between students. It is issued to one named student and stays with them. Passing the login to somebody else is not permitted, and it does not gain anyone anything: the weekly allowance is shared, so a second user simply spends the first one's exercises.
A pass ends when the teacher ends it or when its date runs out. Your work is not deleted at that point, and a teacher can issue a new pass to the same account.

Teachers are welcome to use KotobaPro with their students, to set exercises as homework, and to discuss the material in class. What is not allowed is reproducing the material as your own or distributing it outside the site.
The exercises, passages, recordings, illustrations, and explanations on KotobaPro are ours, written for this site. Your subscription buys you the use of them for your own study, not ownership of them.
What you write and say stays yours. We use it only to give you feedback and to show you your own progress. The privacy policy sets out exactly what happens to your recordings and written answers, including what is not kept.
Feedback on your writing and speaking is produced automatically. It is genuinely useful and it is sometimes wrong — it can miss a mistake, or mark something that is in fact correct. It is not marked by an examiner, it is not an official score, and it does not predict one. Treat it as a well-informed second reader rather than as a verdict, and ask your teacher when the two disagree.
We aim to keep KotobaPro running and correct, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. Maintenance, a failure at one of the services we rely on, or a problem of our own may interrupt it. If an interruption is long enough to meaningfully cost you part of what you paid for, write to hello@kotobapro.com and we will put it right.
You can stop using KotobaPro whenever you like, and you can ask us to delete your account and everything attached to it — the privacy policy explains how.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, particularly for sharing logins, copying the material, or attacking the site. Where the problem is something that can be put right, we will say what it is and give you the chance to do so first. If we close a paid account for a reason that is not your fault, we will refund the unused part of it.
KotobaPro is practice material. We are responsible for providing the service you paid for, and we are not responsible for your test result, for a place you did or did not get, or for any other consequence of how the test went.
Where the law allows us to limit what we owe you, our total responsibility to you is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before the problem arose. Nothing here removes a right you have under consumer law that cannot be signed away.
We may update these terms as the site changes. The date at the top always shows the current version. If a change materially affects what you are paying for, we will tell you before it takes effect, and continuing to use KotobaPro after that means you accept it.
These terms are governed by the law of Quebec, Canada, and the courts of Quebec have jurisdiction over any dispute.
If you are a consumer somewhere else, this does not take away the protection your own country's law gives you. Customers in Japan additionally have the Specified Commercial Transactions Act notice, which sits alongside these terms rather than being replaced by them.
