Phantom Traffic Jams

A phantom traffic jam is a slowdown that appears on a highway with no accident, construction, or other clear cause. Traffic simply bunches up, crawls forward, and then clears again, often for no visible reason. Researchers have shown that phantom jams form naturally once traffic density crosses a certain threshold, triggered by something as small as one driver tapping the brakes. When a driver slows down even slightly, the driver behind must slow down more to keep a safe following distance, and the driver behind that one must slow down even further still. This small delay ripples backward through the line of cars, growing larger with each vehicle until it becomes a full stop somewhere behind the original driver, who may have already sped back up and driven away with no idea a jam formed behind them. Traffic engineers have studied this ripple effect using real highway data and controlled experiments, including one famous study where drivers circled a track and a jam formed spontaneously within minutes, from ordinary human reaction times. One proposed solution involves self-driving cars, which react to speed changes far faster and more consistently than human drivers. Even a small number of automated vehicles mixed into ordinary traffic has been shown to reduce how often phantom jams form and how severe they become.
